A Few Notes & Comments About Harknesses:

Although there are relatively few Harknesses world wide in sheer numbers, many of them have found there way into positions of responsibility, veneration, and gracious respect. Harknesses are found world wide mostly in the English speaking world; and, are most populous in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and of course Scotland. (You will see me repeat this: the vast majority of Harknesses are not English, they are Scottish.)

When the Internet was barely 18 months old, already more than two dozen Harknesses had web pages or entire sites. This is an incredibly large percentage of representation from such a small group. This may indicate a tendency towards alert awareness, education, technical acuity, and sociality, all known Harkness traits.

A few other Harkness trivia: The genes are strong, Harknesses from around the world, and across time, look alike. This is a "scratch-the-surface" hint of how deep the blood runs. Harknesses have great minds, great physical senses, physical strength and longevity, and tend to have deep spiritual feelings. It's difficult to say anything negative about Harknesses, except, sometimes they are temperamental, strong willed, and fierce. Harkness women are not less formidable than the men, and tend to be quite independent. Allowing for the special requirements of motherhood that occupy women and limit their time, you will find as many Harkness women in authoritative positions as any group in the world, --men or women. Apparently, the Harknesses of Australia were begun by a Harkness from the among original Prisoner Ships, in the late 1700's. How ironic that he became a founding father in that great nation, Australia. I have no doubt of the innate nobility coursing through the veins of every blood member or the ancient Harkness Clan.

The Harkness name, Tartan, Code of Arms, Motto, etc. were registered in the ancient Heraldic Archives at least as early as 1272 A.D. Much is hidden or obscure about the secretive and small clan of Harknesses, suggesting the possibility of some special vocation. The motto, recorded in various places, and in various languages, consistently translates to "Trust in God", or "Hope in God.

Harknesses wherever they are still have one foot in Scotland. Evidence indicates that 60 to 80 generations of Scottish family heritage preceded their exodus from Scotland, in the mid to late 1700's. (This exit from the homeland precipitated from widespread famine; and by the "clearances" which were acts of greed on the part of the Scottish Lords whereby land was cleared of people in favor of more profitable animal populations --usually sheep). There is few Harknesses that have been out of Scotland more than 8 generations, unless they are wee wee little. And most of us adults are not more that 6 generations. 6 to 8 generations against 60 to 80 is not a strong dilution; especially since the Harkness gene pool is so strong. I've examined pictures of young Harknesses three generations apart that appear as almost as twins; and in family lines separated in the 1700's making them as much as 10 generations dilute, and the appearance is remarkably comparable to that of immediate brothers. Basically, if you are of Harkness blood, you are a Harkness and you are a probably a Scot. For example, if you are a man ( it may apply to women too ) have you ever picked up a real sword or shield, and felt something? I have, and I can tell you it goes something like this: "um, hmm, ah there it is, the rest of my arm; now I am whole." Have you, man or women, ever experienced a dire emergency where calmness and strength were needed, and that needful state just overcame you. How about physical strength, have you ever surprised yourself. Ever shot a bow & arrow, or rifle or pistol, or thrown a ball --most Harknesses will find extreme accuracy quite an easy achievement; in fact, it's likely that anything else would be painfully uncomfortable. All three of my daughters are crack shots with a heavy caliber pistol, and have been since they were 8 years old (yet they are of a very gentle and sensitive nature). But don't make them angry, they are fiercely independent and know their own minds --again, sound familiar. Weapons and love, strength and independence, commitment and honor, and singleness of mind, with an eye to fairness. In a sense, a Harkness might be described as a blend of fierce guardian and gentle sage. If you are a Harkness you probably have just been well described. And, in response to this you will probably say, I am myself and no other, and there is no one there who will describe me. And, of course, you are right.

A Very Brief Statement About Harkness Lineages:

Virtually all Harknesses are originally from Scotland, and are generally thought of as "Lowlanders" (NOT Highlanders) --Lowlanders are from Southern Scotland, generaly thought of as more sophisticated, typically they had much more contact with the English, and normaly are grouped into "families" instead of clans --yes, Harkness seems to be a Clan (a bit unusual like many aspects of the Harkness lineage). Various branches of the Harknesses were or are located in Ireland, Wales and England, as the they tend to be an active, enterprising, and adventurous --sometimes misadventurous-- group. One problem with tracing the Harkness lineage is the almost ridiculous over use of the same names. This may also reveal the Harkness tendency toward strong identity, loyalty to tradition, family fealty and ancestral respect --all classic Scottish attributes. Nevertheless, divining the path of each family line may take many more years of intense research. For now, all Harknesses worldwide may consider their ultimate heritage to be a group of people located in Scotland in a place once called (what else) "Harkness".(1)
[Note:The place called "Harkness" was probably not called "Harkness"; in Gaelic, the prevailing language, "Harkness" problaby sounded more like "Haiergliess".]
A related issue is the variations on the Harkness name which include such permutations as Hark, Harkens, Harkneff, Harknefs, Harkless, Harker, Herkness, Herkless, etc.
Out of Scotland issued many Harknesses , often as pairs, trios, or groups of brothers and cousins, sometimes with and sometimes without wives, following each other for a while then separating to start anew their own lines. These individual Harknesses and small groups entered America in several ports, entered successively, and migrated frequently, sometimes over long distances.
Of course, simultaneously, some went to Australia, and various other English territories, widening and overlapping the Harkness paths. Occasionally they stayed with and worked with other Harknesses, sometimes for long periods having babies during the stay. Harkness wives and women tended to have many children. I have found numbers like 13 and 14, with 4, 5. 6, 7, 8, and 9 being common. And, Harkness men who lost their wives normally remarried, with two and three marriages not unusual. Across such an active group, lineage may be complex.
The good part is that all of this migration occurred over the past approximately 200 years, a relatively short period in genealogical history.
If you are now having the strong and common yearning to know your family history and specific family line, be assured you are not alone.

(1) [Harkness --as a place name-- was approximately located on the border of Cumberland and Westmoreland, Scotland (this location information was taken from the book by Helen Ann Harkness, of Australia, "Harkness Heroines" originally supplied to her by Strath Hunter Heraldry --Michael P. Wood of Kyeenmagh, N.S.W., Australia.).]
