Through my father's mother's side, I'm related to these families who established farms in this area and became significant cattle and horse breeders between 1842 to the early 1900's. I'm descended from John Harkness who, along with his brother Gideon and several sisters (and later their parents Thomas and Helen Scott Harkness) came to Canada around 1842 from Hawick, where they were originally stone masons. While their oldest brother James remained in Hawick, both of these brothers established farms on the north lake shore line of Georgian Bay in Sydenham and became prosperous farmers in the region. John was my g-g grandfather and his son Thomas, born in 1855 moved westward to Brandon, Manitoba where he too became engaged in horse-trading in the region during the late 1800's. Thomas married Agnes T. Grieve and had two daughters; Helen (my grandmother) and Ruth, who moved further west to Alberta. Helen married Reginald Thomas Halliley and they came to Rochester, NY in the late 1920's. Several notably important Harkness families descended from this originally family, including a grandson of Gideon's; Col. Douglas S. Harkness, who became the Defense Minister of Canada in the mid-1950's during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and a son; Thomas J. Harkness, who married the sister of one of Canada's most prominent landscape artists, Tom Thomson. T.J. became executor of Tom Thomson's estate when the artist mysteriously died while travelling in the Algonquin Park area. Serious inquiries only may be directed to Richard Halliley (born in Rochester NY); gahalliley@gmail.com Richard Haililey Braselton, Georgia - May 29 2010 [This is for the] Harkness family that was primarily of Halifax, Yorkshire, although they were [also] briefly in Kendal, Westmorland as well. My great grandmother was Ellen Harkness, b. 28 Nov 1841 in Halifax. She married twice and died 18 May 1914 also in Halifax. Her parents were Alexander (1798-1866) and Susey Halliwell Harknes Alexander (doesn't have a middle name that I know of) seems to be a son of Anthony who married Ellen (Nelly) King at Halifax 13 July 1783. Anthony appears to have had 15 children (Alexander being #10), most [were] christened at So Parade Wesleyan church in Halifax. I found a burial for Ellen there, but none for Anthony in the church records. That's as far back on the Harkness name that I have [currently]. Helen Gay Rockwood, Michigan - March 20 2009 My name is Roger Steven Harkness, born May 4th, 1959 in Kearney Nebraska. I have three brothers and two sisters. Robert, Bradley and Richard. Thanks, Roger Harkness Kearney, Nebraska - Feb 19, 2009 Hello: I would like to find a person called David Buck Harkness who is my father and has never met me. He was from Alabama, but was living in Tennesse when he marrried my mother named Mary Elizabeth Morton. I was born in Nashville Tennesse. My parents were divorced when I was born. So, he never knew that my mother was expecting a baby. The only thing I know about him is his name, that he worked in Shell Oil Company as a station attendant in Tennesse and he was 28 years old. I was born in October 31 1959. I was so happy to see so many Harknesses here. I have never met another one. Well I would like to find my father or any member of his family, or any information please contact me at my e-mail address. Thanks, Terry Lee Harkness <terrylharkness@netzero.net> GARLAND, TX, USA - February 28, 2006 I find this site extremely fascinating! I am very curious about the Harkness family. I can trace my branch of the Harkness family back to the plantations of Alabama. I have yet to meet another Harkness of color (descendant of enslaved people). such as myself! If anyone has any questions, feel free to email me. Seleena Harkness <seleenaharkness@yahoo.com> Hawaii, USA - November 27, 2004 EDITORS NOTE: Seleena is not alone, there IS a "Black"/African-American line of Harknesses. The Harknesses from Scotland exhibited less American style prejudice and inter-married with many non-Scottish peoples. Scots as a group are likely to intermarry outside of their race. Seleena is a true Harkness. This is a great site. I too am looking into the Harkness surname. My Harkness connection goes back to around 1735 or so; her name is Nancy Harkness. She is my Gr-Gr-Gr-Gr-Gr-Grandmother. We belive she lived in Ireland and Married a man named Philip. We belive his last name was Slaven. They had only one child (a boy) named Barnabus. Born in 1759. Nancy died 7 or 8 years later and the father remarried and Barnabus went to live with his mothers relatives. Barnabus married an Elizabeth Graham and at this time believed to be in Downs Ireland. They came to the United States about 1790. If anyone can give me some pointers on how to find some information on Nancy's Family, it sure would be great. This is my 'Block Wall' and so far I have not been able to find any information on these family in this time frame. I'm looking forward to hearing from any one who might have some Ideas. Sherrie Harrison <kharris671@earthlink.net> Temecula, Ca USA - February 12, 2004 Hi. I've just came by this site and am amazed! I'm one of the Harknesses from Carrickfergus, N. Ireland where the family has been for the past 75 years. Before that we were in Belfast and Crumlin, Co Antrim. The family moved from Glasgow, Scotland in the 19th century. The family business for over a 100 years was John Harkness & Company (existed until the 1970s) which was a transport business in Ireland. the main claim to fame was the transportation of the anchor for the Titanic to the Belfast ship builders Harland & Wolff. Hello to all the Harknesses out there and congratulations on a great site!
